Belen sits 35 minutes south of Albuquerque in Valencia County, a town of 7,000 built around a BNSF rail yard that moves 80-plus trains a day. The Rail Runner station at Reinken and Wisconsin is the southern end of the line, linked by pedestrian overpass to the Becker Avenue MainStreet district and the 1910 Harvey House Museum on First Street, near Pete's Cafe, a New Mexican fixture since 1949. BNSF, Belen Consolidated Schools, and Valencia County offices anchor local paychecks.

Prices are the lowest of the metro options, and the stock is older: frame bungalows near downtown, mid-century ranches along Camino del Llano, historic adobe with irrigation rights, and manufactured homes on half-acre to multi-acre parcels toward Jarales. Inventory runs deep, so buyers can be choosy. Belen Middle and Dennis Chavez Elementary rate above the state average; Belen High sits nearer the middle. Weekends run to the wetland trails at Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area on Highway 47.
