Placitas

Placitas sits in the Sandia foothills off I-25 exit 242, an unincorporated Sandoval County community of about 5,000 spread over 29 square miles of juniper and rock. Lots run an acre and up, and the housing stock leans custom: adobe and pueblo-style homes with viga ceilings, walled courtyards, and windows aimed west at the Rio Grande valley. Subdivisions like Anasazi Trails, Ranchos de Placitas, and the Homesteads each have their own character. Free-roaming horses still cross the roads.

NM-165 is the spine. Homestead Village holds The Merc, Blades' Bistro, and the artist-run Wild Hearts Gallery; Las Placitas Presbyterian Church hosts the Placitas Artists Series, running for four decades. Tunnel Springs and Piedra Lisa trailheads climb into the Cibola National Forest. The practical catch is utilities: most homes run on a private well or a small community water co-op plus septic, not city service. Bernalillo Public Schools serves the area; downtown Albuquerque is a half-hour south.
